4: William Cumpiano makes a
"thinline" cuatro (cont.)
The rear-mounted tuning machines
are attached to the headstock after the finish has been polished. The coqui (Puerto
Rican tree toad) is a dry-transfer which was applied to the headstock before the
finish was sprayed on, so it lies under the finish.
The
tuning machines are a German brand of excellent-quality. Although the side-mounted tuners
and the slotted headstock design are more traditional, many musicians prefer this
configuration because it is much easier to attach the strings this way, and the quality of
available five-course side-mounted tuners is far lower than individual rear-mounted
tuners.
The nut and saddle have been
carefully shaped and fitted, and the instrument is strung up. Finally, a series of careful
playing adjustments are made to insure the greatest playing ease and...
...the instrument is now
complete and ready for shipment.
The proud owner of this
instrument is Daniel Torres of Oakland, California.
