Resources
...for players, makers and lovers of the cuatro

                                                                                                                                                            En español

A new and very modern resource for cuatro players--
Online Cuatro music lessons
We have become aware of, and recently purchased, the first lesson in the series of computer lesson of musical pieces for the cuatro, inaugurated at Puerto Rican Music Online by the brilliant young cuatro star Maribel Delgado.

Each lesson costs $15 and consists of a small reader which you installed in your operating system that allows you a open individual lessons that you can buy. Each lesson appears as a booklet consisting of sequential pages that contain text, images and a video window. A link also places partiture and tablature of each phrase on your desktop.  In the video window, Maribel demonstrates clearly and repeatedly the execution of each phrase at progressively slower speed. At the end all the phrases add up to the total piece. ALTHOUGH THE LESSONS ARE IN SPANISH, non-Spanish speaker can profit from the visuals offered.

We have to point out that this first offering of Maribel's is NOT an introductory course to the Cuatro: On the contrary, this first offering is teaches a rather challenging and complex piece, and assumes that the student already has basic fingering and plucking skills. Although our copy had some minor technical problem, we are extremely enthused at the prospects of this new teaching medium which the pioneering Maribel Delgado has created for us.

The Puerto Rican Cuatro now lives in Norway, where it is called  "cuatron tarina."

The master artisan Jukka Hyninen has dedicated himself to the making of our national instrument in his distant northern country.

After having recieved the Cuatro Project's cuatro construction plan drawing, the Norwegian artisan Jukka Hyninen has documented the process of making our national instrument and has sent us a full-color published article in a Norwegian magazine that describes his effort in bringing the instrument to Norway.

Announcing a towering event in the preservation of traditional Puerto Rican music:

The restoration of the 1929-32 recordings made by the great cuatrista Heriberto Torres and his group, "Los Jardineros"

We would like all the readers, friends and followers of the Puerto Rican Cuatro Project to be aware of the recent and marvelous restoration by the Yazoo label (of Shanachie Records) of the early and seminal recordings of the "Wizard of the Cuatro"  Heriberto Torres in their recent and important compact disc recording, "THE BEST OF LOS JARDINEROS".

Los Jardineros were one of the greatest traditional Puerto Rican string bands. The were legendary for their brilliant musicality. The recordings of 1929-32 capture the spirit and style of Puerto Rican jíbaro and popular music of their time, when the group was at its zenith and strength. The original 78 rpm recordings were pressed more than 75 years ago and until now existed only as extremely rare recordings in private collections.

The Puerto Rican Cuatro Project is proud to have contributed to the production of this important recording project.

Master and apprentice: Roberto Rivera (right)  recently completed his apprenticeship to cuatromaking master Diómedes Matos of Newark NJ (left), a relationship facilitated by the New Jersey Council of the Arts and the Puerto Rican Cuatro Project. Roberto is a full-fledged maker now. View Roberto's webpage by clicking here. See how Roberto creates wonderful floral fingerboard inlays on his (and on his teacher's) cuatros by clicking here.
