The Conference and Festival of the Puerto Rican Cuatro in Chicago with featured stars Yomo Toro; Bill and Edwin Colón Zayas, together with the Orquesta Jibara Antigua/Moderna of the Puerto Rican Cuatro Project with Alvin Medina

A consortium of community groups, cultural agencies and businesses of the great windy city of Chicago, joined with the Cuatro Project to organized a thrilling day and night event in the city's Roberto Clemente School, where Puerto Rican culture and music were given center stage. Thousands attended.

The  Puerto Rican Arts Alliance of   Chicago, sponsored by the Illinois Arts Council, the  Banco Popular, the   Lila Wallace/Reader's Digest Foundation, the Mexico Museum of Fine Arts (yes,   Mexico!) and Chicago's Columbia College de Chicago, put us on a plane to Chicago to help put together a great concert/ conference/ educational showing which displayed the legendary talents of cuatro stars Edwin Colon Zayas and his brother the accompanying guitarist Bill Colon Zayas; the great Yomo Toro; and the prodigious young member of our project, the young New Jersey cuatrista, Alvin Medina together with the nineteenth century Puerto Rican salon orchestra ensemble of the Cuatro Project, the "Orchesta Jibara Antigua."

Edwin and Bill Zayas brought the clamoring audience to its feet many times during their performance of traditional and popular Puerto Rican music onstage in Chicago last November. Listen to a sound clip of their opening number:
